Let me explain what happened here, because I'm not happy about it.
Many moons ago, my easy-to-find email address was added to the XboxGamers developer-spam list, through which their editor BCCs form letters to what I assume is a broad spectrum of Xbox developers. The letters always ask for exclusive content for XboxGamers. I've never responded because I don't like spam. Over the weekend he sent me a personally-addressed message (Subject; Hey Matt!) which was out of the ordinary in and of itself. Most of the message was boilerplate text about what a great site XboxGamers is, and the last bit was a custom paragraph asking for some Halo 2 exclusives.
I told him I work pretty much exclusively with fansites in the Bungie community and he really needed to go through the general Xbox PR folks if he wanted exclusive stuff for his site.
He replied that the Xbox PR folks never help him out much and asked, "Would you be able to comment on a few details about Halo 2?"
I replied that if he had questions he could ask them, but I probably wouldn't have any good answers this early in the development cycle. Obviously it was foolish of me to assume that by "a few details" he actually meant "a few details."
This morning I get an email telling me he's polling his site readership for questions for a full-scale "exclusive interview" and I can have answers for him later this week. Gee, thanks.
This has left an extremely foul taste in my mouth - especially the letter from XboxGamers that addressed my displeasure with this bait-and-switch maneuver by saying "I'm very sorry you feel this way but just answer the ones you can answer....we promise this will be great publicity for your title." Whether XboxGamers get any answers at all is still way, way, way up in the air.
